Establishment of County Cooling Centers
Discussion/Action. With the excessive heat we have experienced, some people in the county have experienced power blackouts, and many people do not have access to air conditioning or adequate shelter to mitigate this level of heat. The situation worsens with climate change. Cooling centers are essential for the health and well-being of our community with these record-breaking temperatures. While the City of Tucson operates cooling centers in such heat waves, the unincorporated areas of our county have not had cooling centers. Several unincorporated communities are particularly vulnerable due to socioeconomic disparities and health issues. We should be prepared for the next heat wave and ready to establish county cooling centers where they are needed to counter it. (District 5)
